Building a More Connected North: Broadband Policy and Future Investment

The Fibre Files Episode 2 Header

Broadband connectivity is just as important to communities as roads, electricity and other essential infrastructure. For Northern Ontario, reliable internet access plays a growing role in supporting economic development, attracting new residents and creating opportunities for local businesses.

But expanding broadband across the North comes with unique challenges, from vast geographic distances to the investment needed to connect smaller, rural communities.

These are some of the topics explored in Episode 2 of The Fibre Files, a podcast sponsored by our parent company, PomeGran, and shared with the NIVO community.

A Northern Perspective on Broadband

In Broadband Policy & Future Investment, host Sam Laprade speaks with Peter Politis, Mayor of Cochrane, about the changing role of broadband connectivity and what it means for the future of Northern Ontario.

With a background spanning municipal leadership, business, economic development and Indigenous and municipal affairs, Peter brings decades of experience advocating for Northern communities and building partnerships across government and industry.

Throughout the conversation, he reflects on how far connectivity has come, from shared telephone lines to the digital infrastructure that now supports businesses, education, healthcare and everyday life.

He also emphasizes that while internet speeds have improved, reliability remains one of the biggest concerns for residents and businesses.

Investing in Northern Ontario’s Future

For Peter, broadband is more than a telecommunications service. It is an essential part of unlocking Northern Ontario’s economic potential.

The conversation explores how improved connectivity can help local businesses reach new markets, allow professionals to work remotely, and make smaller communities more attractive to families and businesses looking to establish roots.

Peter also discusses the importance of municipal advocacy, government investment and collaboration among communities, industry and Indigenous partners.

One of his key messages is that infrastructure planning needs to look beyond short-term priorities. Building a stronger Northern Ontario requires long-term investment and a shared vision for the region’s future.

Connecting Communities Through Collaboration

At NIVO, we recognize the importance of bringing better connectivity to rural and underserved communities.

As PomeGran continues expanding fibre infrastructure across Northern Ontario, NIVO is working to bring internet service to more homes and businesses throughout the region.

Episode 2 of The Fibre Files highlights why these efforts matter and how local leadership, partnerships and investment can help build a more connected North.
